Conformation (Characteristic and Description) Flashcards
Post legged or straight behind.
Not much angle through the hock. Predisposed to spavin and concussion related issues.
Carpus varus.
Bowlegged stance.
Open knees.
Irregular profile of the carpus. Not likely to cause unsoundness.
Cut out under the knees.
Cannon bone is positioned palmarly to the carpus/radius.
Calf or sheep knees.
Compressed dorsal carpal bones, stressed check ligaments and likely to break down.
Bow legged behind.
The hocks are far apart wiht the cannons angled in towards the ground.
An upright shoulder.
Restricts the range of motion upward and forward.
Camped behind (Pelvic limb)
Hind limb placed behind point of buttocks.
Offset or bench knees.
Cannon bone is positioned laterally to the carpus/radius.
Sickle hocks.
Hocks have more bend than normal. Cannons are angled dorsally from the hock down.
Camped in front (Pelvic limb)
The entire hind limb is angled forward from the hip.
Short legged horses.
Generally not fluid movers.
Flat dorsal surface of the knee is rotated laterally.
Rotational deviation of the fore limb and may predispose to interference.
Good muscle development of the shoulders and light, underdeveloped hind quarter.
Tends to be heavy on the forehand.
Buck or goat knees.
Knees are bent forward, with potential stress to the SDFT, SL and sesamoid bones.
