Gait Flashcards
Outline the steps involved in one complete gait cycle
Heel strike (initial contact) Foot flat (loading response) Midstance Heal off (terminal stance) Toe off (pre swing)-->initial swing Midswing Heel strike (Terminal swing)
What is the difference between classic and new gait terms
- moment in time (classic)
What is swing phase of gait
What is stance phase of gait
What is their distribution in gait?
When leg is not in contact with ground
When foot is in contact with ground
60-40 (stance:swing). As youpick up speed, less stance
Which phases of gait are about weight acceptance
Initial contact
Loading response
Which phases of gait are about single limb support
Mid stance
Terminal stance
Pre swing
Which phases of gait are about limb advancement
Pre swing
Initial swing
Mid swing
Terminal swing
What is BOS (=base of support)?
Defined as the area within an outline of all ground contact points
What is COM (=centre of mass)?
The average position of all the parts of the system, weighted according to their masses
For straight line walking, COM must be within BOS for maximum balance
What are the types of turn?
- Step turn- elderly patients do this in order to keep the BOS as wide as possible
- Ipsilateral pivot
- Ipsilateral crossover
