Gait Flashcards
What are the 2 main phases of the gait and how much time is spent in each one?
Stance - 60%
Swing - 40%
During which of the 2 main phases, do most problems occur?
Stance
What are the 8 sub-phases of the gait cycle?
Initial contact Loading response Mid stance Terminal stance Pre swing Initial swing Mid swing Terminal swing
What is the major characteristic of the 8 sub-phases of the gait cycle?
Initial contact - contact with leading foot
Loading response - shock absorption
Mid stance - progression over stationary foot, stability
Terminal stance - progress past stationary foot, prepare to swing
Pre swing - weight release from stationary foot
Initial swing - advance foot from trailing position
Mid swing - foot clearance/limb advancement
Terminal swing - complete limb advancement
What is the amount of rotation of the innominate during the gait cycle?
4˚
By how much does the hip on the non-weight bearing side drop during the gait cycle?
2”
During the gait cycle, the pelvis shifts laterally by how much?
2”
What is Antalgic gait?
Limp to avoid pain on weight-bearing structures
Short stance phase on affected side
What is Arthrogenic gait?
Stiffness in affected joints
Plantar flexion of foot opposite affected side to increase clearance
Affected leg is circumducted
What is Ataxic gait?
Unsteady, uncoordinated walking
Wide base, feet thrown out
Pt. watches feel while walking
What is Parkinsonian gait?
Slow, small shuffling steps
Reduced stride length/walking speed
What is Steppage gait?
Full foot drop
Hip raised very high to clear toe
Quiet gait
What is Hemiplegic gait?
Leg stiff, no flexion at knee and ankle
Leg is rotated away from body then back towards it with each step (forms semicircle)
