When constructing forms, the important point in terms of code is whether or not the cured concrete meets the requirements of Code. True or False
True
When constructing forms, the important point in terms of code is whether or not the cured concrete meeds the requirements of Code.
Which kind of forming material can only be wet for a certain period of time before the concrete is placerd?
Fiber Tube Column
How many times can a concrete form be re-used before throwing out?
Hundreds of times before thrown out. Watch out for over nailing and nailing too much.
As soon as forms arrive on-site, what is the first step?
Forms should be oiled or sealed before use to prevent swelling when concrete is placed. Sort by size and stack the inside forms on sleepers inside the foundation perimeter. The outside forms are stacked outside the perimeter.
When is the damage to forms most common?
During the stripping phase. Prevent with proper nailing.
What kind of nails are adequate for nailing panels in concrete forms.
1 3/4” finishing nails, as it is the ties that give strength to the forms.
What kind of nails are good enough for blackouts, bulk heads, whalers and strongbacks?
Duplex nails.
What tool should you pry concrete forms with?
Wooden wedges instead of steel bars.
As soon as forms are stripped, what is the first step?
After stripping forms: De-nail, scrape, and oiled to protect forms from the absorbing moisture or rotting an molding during storage.
How should stripped concrete forms be stored after use?
They should neatly stacked in a dry area as to no warp them.
What is the order that carpenters use when planning the wall form layout?
1) Corners. 2) T panel Locations 3) Steps 4) Full Panels 5 Infill
I C T S F I
If a design is required to be certified by a Professional Engineer, when must the inspection be done by the Professional Engineer?
Immediately before placement of concrete or other intended loading.
What is the maximum height of a step in a footing?
24 “ or 600 MM
What is architectural conrete?
Concrete surfaces that are left to be exposed to view, they have a nicer & smoother finish usually.
What is the formula for finding the Centreline Perimeter?
(Length + Width) x 2 - (4 X Wall Thickness)
What is the formula for finding the contact area?
Centreline x height of footing forms x 2
What is the formula for finding the lineal feet?
Centerline x 2
What is the formula for finding the slab area?
(Length of building - (2 X wall thickness)) X (width of building - (2 x wall thickness)
What is the formula for finding the slab volume?
Slab area x slab thickness
What is the formula for finding the diameter
of a column?
Diameter = Radius divided by 2
What is the formula for finding the area of a circle?
Pi X radius x radius or Pi X (RSquared)
How are simple forms held in place?
With wooden or steel stakes.
How are simple form boards held together?
With wooden cleats(Straps).
When building a simple footing form, what is done first?
It is positioned and staked.
After positioning(leveling etc.) and staking the simple footing form, what is done next?
The inside form is then positioned using cleats as spacers and staked in space. The height of the inside form is then set using a hand level working off the outside footing form.
How can you fine tune the height of a simple footing form?
Pounding the stakes , they can initially be set a little high.
If a footing is 4 inch thick, what can the projection of the footing be?
4 inches.
Why are blockouts for keyways bevelled at 15 to 20 degrees?
For easy removal, and the blockout is coated with form oil.
What does a keyway do?
It prevents lateral movement on the foundation walls during back-fill.
When footings are placed on sloping rock, what may be required?
Dowel may be required to build footings on sloping rock.
In concrete footings, how must rebar be placed?
It must be at least 3” clear of the ground and 2” clear from the sides of the footing form.
When ground slopes, what kind of footings are required?
Stepped footings.
When are steel stakes best used?
When the ground is hard.
What do large column footings support?
Tall buidings
What is the purpose for Tapered Pier Footings?
Footings for lamp standards
What is a caution with Tapered Pier Footings?
The pressure of fresh concrete pushes outward on the forms at a right angle to the form’s face, causing an uplift action.
Tapered Pier footings need to be weighted down to resist upward push.
