Fungi, Protozoa , Bacteria and Viruses Flashcards
Biology stuff
How many types of microbes are there?
Four (MAIN) types
Fungi
Single celled, can invade cells and absorb nutrients, can live on decaying surfaces or in living tissue.
Protozoa
Single-celled, larger than viruses and bacteria, absorbs nutrients from surroundings
What causes malaria and amoebic dysentery?
Protozoa
Bacteria
Single - celled, lives between cells, grows very quickly (under the right conditions)
What leads to food poisoning?
Bacteria
What causes diseases such as cholera and pneumonia?
Bacteria
Viruses
Lives inside other cells, invades then destroys cells, responsible for many diseases
Are viruses technically living things?
No
Superbugs
Particular strain of microorganisms that is resistant to treatments like antibiotics, may be possible to treat superbugs more effectively but we should consider how we can prevent the spread of superbugs
What are superbugs resistant to?
Treatments like antibiotics
Where does bacteria live?
Between cells
Where do viruses live?
Inside other cells
Which microbe is larger than viruses and bacteria?
Protozoa
