Q

Which group of patients is susceptible to systemic fungal infections?

A

Immunocompromised

17
Q

What diseases do cryptococcus cause?

A

Pneumonia and meningitis

18
Q

What diseases do aspergillus cause and describe the disease

A

Pulmonary aspergillosis - fungal balls in the lung that can be seen in an Xray

19
Q

How is cryptococcus identified under microscope?

A

Stain with india ink because it is a CAPSULATED yeast

20
Q

What diseases do systemic candida cause

A

Fungal balls in the retina, Hepatosplenic candidiasis

21
Q

What diseases do mucormycosis cause

A

Black skin lesions on wrist and ‘cheerios’ signs in the lungs

22
Q

List the other 2 di-morphic fungi

A

Pneumocystis jiroveci & Talaromyces marneffei

23
Q

Describe Pneumocystis jiroveci

A
  • Pnemonia in immunocompromised patients (esp AIDS)
  • Does not respond to antifungals but to antibiotics: co-trimoxazole
  • Microscopy need to use SILVER STAIN
  • Cannot diagnose with culture
24
Q

Describe Talaromyces marneffei

A
  • Severe skin lesions in immunocompromised patients (esp AIDS)
  • Diagnosed via culture in red pigment due to characteristic appearance: red mouldy sponge
25
Q

What is the first line drug for cryptococcus meningitis?

A

Amp B + 5 Flucytosine

26
Q

What is the first line drug for aspergillosis?

A

Voriconazole
