Name the 5 functions of the skeleton
1- STORAGE of calcium & phosphorus
2- PROTECTION of vital organs
3- ATTACHMENT of muscles
4- PRODUCTION of blood cells & platelets
5- MOVEMENT of joints
Storage of calcium & phosphorus
Both minerals are vital for DEVELOPING & MAINTAIN STTONG & HEALTHY BONES(1).
For example, the storage of calcium would allow us to WITHSTAND AN IMPACT(less chance of fracturing a bone) (1).
This then allows you to have GOOD HEALTH, and CONTINUE PLAYING WITHOUT INJURY.
Protection of vital organs
The hard nature of BONES means the Skeleton can PROTECT VITAL ORGANS AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. (1) For example, the CRANIUM PROTECTS THE BRAIN. (2) This allow a footballer to make a header and CONTINUE PLAYING WITHOUT INJURY. (3)
Attachment of muscles
Provides a FRAMEWORK and ANCHOR POINTS for muscles to attach.(1) When the MUSCLE CONTRACTS, it PULLS THE BONE to move.(1) For example, when preparing to make a football, the QUADRICEPS CONTRACTS, then the knee EXTENDS.(1)
Production of blood cells and platelets
RED & WHITE blood cells & platelets are made and stored in BONE MARROW. (1) red (carry oxygen to muscles), white(fights infections), platelets(helps clot blood).(2)
Movement of joints
The skeleton is JOINTED to allow bones to COME TOGETHER to form LEVERS.(1) Different joints allow DIFFERENT RANGES OF MOVEMENT(1). For example, a sprinter is FLEXING their ELBOW & KNEE(hinge joint) to help produce more EXPLOSIVE MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS to cover the distance quickly.(1)
