What are functionalists concerned with in the family?
Family’s role in preparation of children to fit into adult society to survive and how the family fits with other social institutions= social institutions effectively + harmoniously
What four main functions did Murdock argue there was ?
Sexual- expressing sexuality in socially approved way
Reproduction- stability for reproduction & rearing of children
Socialisation- children learn socially acceptable behaviour & culture of society=value consensus
Economic- family provides food & shelter for family members
What functionalism?
A consensus theory emphasising integration & harmony between different parts of society, way parts work together to maintain society
