Functional Neuroanatomy of Movement Disorders Flashcards
What does the primary motor cortex do?
Execute movements on opp side of body, motor planning
What are the 3 levels in the UMN?
Cortical grey matter, white matter tracts and spinal tracts
What are the 5 levels in the LMN?
Ventral horn of spinal cord, cauda equina, peripheral nerve, NMJ and motor neurons
UMN lesion clinical picture
Paralysis of movement, hypertonic, hopping rabbit posture, moderate muscle wasting, inc reflexes and babinski sign
LMN lesion clinical picture
Paralysis of individual muscles, hypotonic muscles, muscle wasting and reflexes absent
3 parts of the basal ganglia
Caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus
What is the lentiform nucleus?
Putamen and globus pallidus
What is the corpus striatum?
Putamen and caudate nucleus, they are functionally related
What system is involved in emotions?
Limbic system (hippocampus, amygdala and hypothalamus)
List some hyperkinetic disorders
Chorea, ballismus and athetosis
What disease is related to hypokinetic disorders?
Parkinson’s disease
3 main features of PD?
Tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity
Characteristics of huntington’s disease
Loss of GABA-releasing neurons of corpus striatum, chorea, dementia, unsteadiness and speech problems
How to assess the cerebellum?
Dysdiadokokinesis
Ataxia (finger-nose, heel-shin)
Nystagmus (invol eye movements)
Intention tremor
Speech disturbance
Hypotonia
