Functional groups – formula, structure, & polar/nonpolar/charged Flashcards
Functional groups:
Functional groups: are clusters of atoms that influence a molecule’s function by participating in chemical reactions.
Bonding & Properties:
Bonding: Functional groups are covalently bonded to the carbon backbone of molecules.
Properties: They have distinct properties such as solubility and chemical reactivity.
Reactivity:
They are reactive and often ionic or strongly polar, making them attracted to other ionic or polar molecules like water.
hydroxyl:
alcohols, OH
carbonyl:
aldehydes C=O, C =down O
carboxyl:
ketones, O =down C, -down OH
amino:
amino acids, H, -down N, -down H
phosphate:
nucleotides, nucleic acids, other cellular molecules, O -down P, -left O, -right O, =downO
sulfhydryl:
many cellular molecules, -SH
