what is the pathophysiology of functional disorders?
problem in the way brain is sending messages to body, problem in the way body is receiving messages from brain
what are the psychiatric disorders that can cause functional symptoms?
adjustment disorder, anxiety disorders of all kinds and depressive disorder
what are the predisposing factors to developing functional disorders?
genetic factors, structural disease, personality traits, depression/anxiety, adverse experiences
what are the precipitating factors to developing functional disorders?
physical injury/illness acute dissociation, concern/attention about bodily symptoms, stressful life events
what are the perpetuating factors to developing functional disorders?
changes in nervous system function, subtle neuroendocrine changes, worry about cause, avoidance of symptoms provocation anger/frustration/depression, not being believed, stigma of undiagnosed illness, loss of job/independent income
what are functional symptoms?
where one cannot easily associate the symptoms with a classically identifiable organic disease process
what are common functional symptoms?
pain, altered sensation, dizziness, movement disorders, weakness, seizures, cognitive symptoms

functional weakness, non-epileptic attacks, hemisensory symptoms
