What is the mode of action of a functional appliance to treat a Class 2
malocclusion?

A

Appliance causes forward posturing of the mandible
This results in soft tissue / muscular stretch
Resulting forces are transmitted to the teeth and bone
Resulting in dental and skeletal effect (the ratio of change – 70:30)

What are the dentoalveolar effects of a functional appliance?

A

• Reduction in overjet
• Reduction in overbite
• Lower anterior teeth procline and Upper anterior teeth retrocline.
• Distal tipping of upper buccal segment teeth
• Mesial movement of lower buccal segment teeth
• Limiting incisor eruption and permitting buccal segment tooth eruption.
• Lateral open bite at the end of treatment.

A

• Pt has it in their mouth on arrival.
• Speech is good when wearing the appliance.
• Appliance can be loose fitting.
• Can be marks on the pallet of the outline of the appliance and reddening of the fit surface.
• Appliance can appear cloudy form wear.
• Pt is able to remove appliance and place in situ with ease.
• Dentoalveola effects are occurring.

be successful?

A

• Blocks not active
• Pt compliance (not been worn for long enough).
• Not used during pubertal growth.
• Not used as instructed (only wearing one arch)
