Anatomy Flashcards
Which tooth sometimes has an additional palatal cusp?
What is it called?
Maxillary first permanent molar
Carabelli
Which group of teeth are present in the permanent dentition that are not present in the primary dentition?
Premolars
State three differences between permanent and primary teeth
Primary teeth crowns are smaller.
Primary teeth are whiter.
Primary teeth have shorter roots.
What is a Leeway space and what is its relevance in Orthodontics?
Leeway space is the size differential between the primary posterior teeth canine, first and second molars, and the permanent canine and first and second premolar.
Usually the sum of the primary tooth widths is greater than that of their permanent successors.
So when these primary teeth exfoliate, there is usually a slight amount of space (about 2.5mm per side in the lower arch and 1.5mm per side in the upper arch).
This space allows forward movement of the lower molars and therefore achieve class I molar relationship
At what age should an Orthodontist be able to palpate a canine?
10 years old
what age does an upper central incisor develop?
Primary central incisor 12-16 weeks utero
Secondary central incisor 3-4 months old
What sequence does the permanent dentition erupt?
upper 6, 1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 7, 8
lower 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
