- Not a continuum from “bad” to “good”
- Different circumstances require different approaches
- May utilize several approaches at the same time
- Blending and emphasizing approaches is critical
- Laissez-faire is the absence of leadership: avoid it!
- Social agreement between followers to provide incentives related to work performance.
- Require less engagement which primarily focus on the day-to-day interactions.
- Less likely to produce lasting changes in values or behaviors but can produce immediate results.

- Require more engagement which focus more on an individuals needs, development, and growth.
- More likely to produce lasting changes in an organization’s or individuals’s values, behaviors, and beliefs.
