Fuels And Earth Science Flashcards
What is crude oil?
The main source of hydrocarbons
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon only
State the 3 steps of the formation of oil and gas
- Dead Sea organisms settle on sea bed
- Layers of sedimentary rock build up on top
- Heat, pressure and the absence of oxygen cause oil and gas to form
Is crude oil renewable or non renewable?
Non renewable
How can crude oil be separated?
Using fractional distillation
Glamorous People Keep Dogs For Babies
Gas Petrol Kerosene Diesel Fuel oil Bitumen
What is gas used for?
Heating and cooking
What is petrol used for?

What is fuel oil used for?
Fuel for ships
What is bitumen used for?
Roads and roofs
What are the properties for the fractions at the top?(gas)
3
Longer carbon chains
Harder to ignite
Low boiling point
What are the properties of the fractions at the bottom? (Bitumen)
2
High boiling points
Less volatile
What does petrochemical mean?
Chemical that comes from crude oil

What is the formula for ethane?
C2H6
What is the formula for propane?
C3H8
What is the formula for butane?
C4H10
What are the similarities of alkanes? (5)
All saturated
Same general formula
Only differ by CH2
Similar physical properties
All react in similar ways
What does saturated mean?
Only have single bonds
What are alkenes and what do they do to bromine?
Unsaturated
Bromine decolourises
What is complete combustion?
Reacting with plenty of oxygen to release energy
What happens to carbon in complete combustion?
It oxidises to become carbon dioxide
What happens to hydrogen in complete combustion?
It oxidises to become water
What is the general formula for complete combustion?
Hydrocarbon+oxygen->carbon dioxide+water
What is incomplete combustion?
When the supply of oxygen is poor
What happens in incomplete combustion?
Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and soot are released instead of carbon dioxide
What is the general formula for incomplete combustion?
Hydrocarbon+water->carbon monoxide+soot
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?(5)
Colourless
Odourless
Tasteless
Dense - sinks to floor
Near to where people sleep
Why is carbon monoxide toxic?
Binds with haemoglobin
Stops oxygen binding
Stops respiration
Eventually become unconscious and die
What is acid rain?
Rain with a pH of less than 5.2
How is acid rain produced? (4)
- Burning fossil fuels
- Sulfur impurities
- Acidic gas
- Rain
What are the positives of hydrogen?(3)
Very clean
Only waste product is water
Renewable
What are the negatives of hydrogen?(4)
Specific, expensive engine
Manufacture uses energy from another source
Hard to store
Not widely available
What is cracking?
The breaking down of larger saturated hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more useful ones, some of which are unsaturated
What is used in cracking?
Heat and catalyst
Why does cracking need lots of energy?
It involves breaking strong covalent bonds
What was earth like in the beginning?
Covered in volcanoes

What are the greenhouse gases?
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Water vapour
What is global warming?
Rise in average global temperature
What are the 5 stages of global warming?
- Earth radiates some of the heat energy as infrared
- Some of it is absorbed by the gases
- Some is reflected back to Earth
- Some is re-emitted back into space
- Greenhouse effect
What is climate change?
Changes to average weather conditions
What are the 5 causes of climate change?
