Fuel Cells Flashcards
what are the 2 types of cells
chemical and fuel
what is a fuel cell
hydrogen and oxygen are used to produce a voltage and only water is the product
what are the steps to make a chemical cell
- place a piece of zinc in zinc sulfate solution
- place a piece of copper in a copper sulfate solution
- place a piece of filter paper soaked in a potassium chloride solution between the 2 containers
- use crocodile clips to connect the 2 pieces of metal and to create a current
how does a chemical cell work
electrons will flow through from the zinc to the copper because zinc is more reactive. ions pass through the filter paper into the other beaker. creating a current
what are 2 advantages of chemical cells
portable
cheap
what are 2 advantages of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells
produce only water as waste
produce a voltage as long as the fuel and air are supplied
what are 2 disadvantages of chemical cells
contains harmful substances
will stop working when one of the reactants is used up
what are 2 disadvantages of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells
not portable
expensive
