What is frozen shoulder also known as?
Adhesive capsulitis
What is frozen shoulder?
The glenohumeral joint capsule becomes contracted and stuck to the humeral head
What is primary adhesive capsulitis?
Idiopathic
What is secondary adhesive capsulitis?
Associated with
- rotator cuff tendinopathy
- subacromial impingement syndrome
- biceps tendinopathy
What are risk factors for frozen shoulder?
Age 40-70
Female
DM
Prior history of frozen shoulder
What are the features frozen shoulder?
Generalised deep constant shoulder pain
Stiffness
Generalised tenderness on palpation
Limited ROM
- external rotation
- flexion
What are the stages of frozen shoulder?
Stage 1 = ‘freezing’ stage
Stage 2 = ‘frozen’ stage
Stage 3 = ‘thawing’ stage
What is the ‘freezing’ stage?
6-9 months
Gradual
- increase in pain
- decrease in ROM
What is the ‘frozen’ stage?
4-9 months
Slow pain improvement
Stiffness remains
What is the ‘thawing’ stage?
5-26 months
Motion returns

Clinically
