Alexander Wendt (3) types of relations:
enmity → sharp distinction of self vs. others (US-N-Korea relations)
friendship → about a strong positive identification of Seld with Other as in the angloshpere (relations among Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the US )
rivalry → located in between often characterizing great power relations
Nb.useful for study of diplomatic relations among states
Refining and extending the spectrum
With dehumanization when the enemy is no longer recognized as a human being, as in Nazi Germany’s diplomacy facilitating war and genocide; and amalgamated self, a process through which Self and Other cease to exist and form a new self, as in the sceretariats of IGOs and particularly the EU and its EEAS
role of diplomats
to help produce and reproduce such relations may be understood as that of a socializer or teacher who mold relations through social influence and persuasion
It may also be seen as actors making their relations together, notably when they reciprocate around dialogue through [practice or with metis ie. the agential power to change relations as for the authors of the European unification process
