Hans Morgenthau’s and Politics among nations
balancing
- ‘peace through accomadation’, the - - only kind of tenuous peace attainable in an anarchical world
- -requires being pragmatic
- it has a normative character. eg. Kissinger when he was National Secuirty Advisor and later Secretary during Nixon and Ford admnis. Corresponds to the natural distribution of power in the anarchical global system
realism
the Realist paradigm does not say much about the spectrum of relations among states on the diplomatic scene . NB. States stay away from “thick” relations (states should not become too close together) the switching of alliances
neo realists
Theory of International Politics by Kenneth Waltz, aimed at explaining how things really are, rather that what they ought to be
neo-classical realists
seeks to explain under what conditions states balance and under what conditions they do not (not taken for granted). YET, they do not push as much emphasis on diplomacy as Classical Realists do.
