Freud: The Dreamwork Flashcards
Tragedy of Destiny
its tragic effect depends on the conflict between the all-powerful will of the gods and the vain efforts of human beings threatened with disaster; resignation to the divine will is the intended lesson. [paraphrased]
latent content
the instigating and underlying ‘dream-thoughts’
Condensation
A number of dream-elements (themes, images, figures, ideas etc) are combined into one, so that the dream becomes more compact or condensed than the dream-thoughts. (freud.org.)
Displacement
The emotion associated with one idea or experience is detached from it and attached to another one. (freud.org)
Why do we have dreams?
loaded psychic material would be loaded into the subconscious because we can’t handle it
*we would repeatedly wake up if the traumas manifest directly
*everyone has a censor to keep material in the unconscious
(solution- dreamwork that acts as a pressure release valve)
*dreamwork works when some material is smuggled past the censor into the conscious
manifest content
material that slips by in the dream
what we remember when we wake up
What makes up the structure of a dream?
- Manifest content
2. Latent content- has to be analyzed (disguised meaning of a dream)
What is representation?
thoughts are strung together into a logical order (editor of your dream) (transforming thoughts into individual images)
