What is Freud’s psychoanalytic theory on personality development?
unresolved childhood issues
fixation model (traits depend on stage you get stuck at)
derive pleasure from activities (sucking, grasping)
emerge in later adult sexual activity
What is the oral stage?
0-18mo
mouth: sucking (pleasure)
dependency
adult: dependent/passive or independent
objectless/narcissism (focus on themselves) to awareness of others (anxious when mother leaves)
What is the Anal stage?
18mo-3.5 yrs
anus: elimination
self-control/obedience (toilet training)
Adult: anal expulsive (wasteful, mess) anal retentive (cleanliness, compulsive, control)
Explain Freud’s concept of fixation?
Fixation at any stage leads to a preoccupation with the pleasures & issues
extent of fixation: magnitude of frustration
What is the Phallic (oedipal) stage?
3.5-6yrs
penis
morality & sexual identity
oedipal complex: boy rivals father for mom - overcomes crisis = identify w/father, internalize superego (adopt parents morals)
electra complex: girls rivals mom for father - overcome = identify w/mom
Adult:
promiscuous or puritanical (strict morals)
What is the latency stage?
6yrs - puberty (around 11yrs)
repress sexual feelings
What is the Genital stage (puberty)?
puberty +
genitals
maturity & life enhancement (free from parents)
