freud Flashcards
Libido
According to Freud, the driving force behind personality, representing the energy from life instincts that motivates behavior and fuels pleasure-seeking tendencies.
Dual instinct theory
Freud’s theory that human behavior is driven by two primary instincts: eros, the life instinct or the drive for pleasure, and thanatos, the death instinct or the drive for aggression and self-destruction.
Psyche
Refers to the basic structure of personality as theorized by Freud.
Levels of consciousness: Freud proposed three levels of consciousness: the conscious, which contains thoughts and perceptions currently in awareness; the preconscious, which includes thoughts and memories that can be readily brought into consciousness; and the unconscious, which consists of thoughts, desires, and memories that are repressed and not easily accessible to conscious awareness.
Freudian Slip
Also known as a slip-of-the-tongue, it refers to an unintentional error in speech or action that reveals an unconscious thought or desire.
What are the three component sof the structural model of personality
Id, Ego, Superego
What is ID
The primitive and instinctual part of the mind, driven by the pleasure principle and seeking immediate gratification of basic desires and needs.
The Ego
The rational and decision-making part of the mind, operating on the reality principle, which mediates between the id and the external world.
SuperEgo
The moral part of the mind, incorporating societal values and moral standards. It consists of the ego-ideal (the internalized image of what one should strive to be) and the conscience (internalized sense of right and wrong)
What is psychosexual development
Freud’s theory that the first years of life shape personality through stages characterized by the focus of pleasure-seeking energy (libido) on different erogenous zones of the body
what are the stages of psychosexual development
Oral (0-18month), Anal (18 months-3 years), Phallic (3-6 years),Lattency Period( 6 years-puberty), Genital ( puberty onwards)
What happens in the oral stage
Pleasure centers on the mouth, fixation can lead to dependency or aggression in life
What happens in the Anal stage
Pleasure focuses on the bowel and bladder elimination; fixation can result in either being stingy or overly orderly
Phallic
Sexual feelings are focused on the genitals; oedipus and electra conflicts occur and identification with the same-sex parent develops
Latency Periods
Sexual feelings are repressed and the focus is on social and intellectual activities
