Frequency lowering Flashcards
What is frequency lowering?
Lowering of higher speech frequencies input to lower frequency speech information so person can use these cues when HF areas are affected by significant loss.
Don’t just want to make the signal audible but preserve the information in the speech signal,
Why use frequency lowering?
Speech may be distorted with amplification.
Amplification of high frequency can mask lower frequency elements of speech information
When HF affected by significant loss 80+
What is frequency transposition?
And what are the results of it?
When high frequencies are removed and presented at approx 2kHz lower. This can cause speech formats to be covered by another frequency band.
Can improve speech clarity.
Can result in masking of lower frequencies.
What is frequency compression?
Squashing if signal into a lower frequency band. Every output frequency corresponds to an input frequency.
What is frequency translation?
Uses classification of high frequency sounds and moves according to classification. Input stays the same if there is no high frequency input.
How can we find out if it is working?
Detect HF sounds in the environment
Identify a wide range of consonant sounds
Impact on speech production
Identify speech in noise and quiet.
Look for increase in ability over months.
