Raise a large army, force the monarch into battle and have an alternative ruler available, for example:

  • Nothumberland supported LJG
  • Wyatt supported Elizabeth
  • The northern earls supported Mary Queen of Scots
  • Essex supported James VI of Scotland

  • Drew up grievances- PoG, Western, Ketts
  • Threatened or intimidated local gentry
  • Used violence
