What caused the silken Thomas rebellion?

A

The earl of Kildare was summoned to England and lodged in the tower where he died
Thomas Fitzgerald, Kildare’s son, raised 1000 men and attacked the pale as a result of this
The primary cause was political as silken wanted to drive the English out, religious changes such as the reformation were causes also

A

Politically motivated against English control, religion and defence of Catholicism were used to gain support
Shane O’Neill 1558-67- wanted to rule Ulster and plotted with France and Mary Queen of Scots
Fitzgerald rebellion 1569-73- response to growing English influence
Tyrone 1595-1603- plantation system and growing influence of English settlers
