Longer term political causes

A

As feudal system erupted, the king lost some of his power.
Queen and nobles controlled Louis, while they relied on absolute monarch.
The king neglect the country affaires and interested in locks.

Long term economical causes

A

Growing government debts-The royal family spent too much money as Queen spent a lot on luxuries. To pay the debts, they need to rise the tax. By 1789, they have to spend 41% of their income to pay the debts.
Attempt to tax nobles- failed and made the nobles angry.
Too much tax on third estates, as the cost of life rose 45%, wages only rose half 22%.

Social causes

A
Rise of middle class -as the system erupted, more middle class people get richer and there was huge economical difference in poor and rich in an estate.
Increasing of feudal dues- huge increase in population, which means more people need jobs, so wages went down and food price rose as more people needed to be fed.
Increasing of poverty- due to heavy taxation and hardness to find jobs, therefore they don't have money to buy food.

Intellectual causes

A

The Enlightenment- scientific ideas grew. Loke wrote a book claimed that power of monarch should be limited, the king should show interest govern his people.
The American WOI (declared independent in 1776)- showed the Enlightenment ideas works. New ideas eg everyone is born equal spread.
As they know more they realised how unfair they have been treated.

Short term causes

A

1787-1789 bad weather and harvest failed. Food price gained.
August 1788 as urban workers need to spent 50% of their wages on bread, economic slumped and government bankrupted. Louis was forced to call the estates general who had been dismissed for a century.
Early 1789 - representatives elected, being optimistic and drew up the list.
May 1789 kings showed no interested in major reform at meeting.
20th June- NA formed, tennis court oath, new constitution for France, Louis began to call up troops.

Louis escape

A

Louis is now a constitutional monarch, much less powerful. Nobility was abolished.
Tried to gather his power back, escape to Netherlands where queen’s brother is the ruler.
20th June 1791 he left the palace and was caught at Varennes on 21st.

A

Sentenced to death on 17th January 1793, 21st January he was executed by guillotine.
