Seven years war
1756-1763 British and France fight over Canada. British was deeply in debt followed by victory.
Proclamation
1763 King George III announced not allowed to move west of the Appalachian Mountain.
He could not afford another war with France.
Colonists were angry they need to own lands to vote.
Ignored the king and move west anyway.
Stamp Act
1765 to pay the tax, British put a tax on every legal document used in colonies.
American boycotted the British goods.
Boston massacre
1770 clash between colonist and British soldiers.
Five colonists were killed.
Soldiers were found not guilty.
Tea Act
1773 tax on all tea imported from Britain
The Boston tea party
1773
Sons of Liberty organised a protest against the Tea Act.
Threw all the tea on the ships into the sea.
Intolerable Acts
1774
Punishment for the Tea Party.
Closed down the port of Boston until the colonists paid for all the teas they threw into Boston Harbor.
Any meetings we forbidden without governments’ permission.
Made the colonist to house and feed the British soldiers.
Distance caused British to lose the war
Roughly 3,200 miles away from Britain.
Rely on navy.
Could not react to the battles quickly.
Time
Reports and requests took months to arrive England.
Terrain
More mountains and larger.
British needs to station a town to hold it, weakened the army.
Supplies had to be moved from the ports before they could then taken further inland.
American knew the land better than British did
Tactics
American sailors attacked the British ships, and captured the navy which British had relied on.
Guerrilla warfare, attacking and retreating.
Allies
Britain had no allies to support money and applies.
Spain, Netherland and France supported colonist in order to stop Britain from expanding its empire.
After American won the war
Declared independent in 1776. American constitution was made to protect the rights.
