free will and determinism Flashcards
what is determinism?
the veiw that behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal or external forces and that free will is an illusion. behaviour has a cause so it is therefore predictable
what is hard determinism?
the view that forces outside our control such as biology or experience shape our behaviour
what is soft determinism?
the view that behaviour is constrained by biological or environmental forces to a certain extent but there is an element of free will
what is biological determinism
the view that human behaviour is innate and determined by biological influences such as genetics
what is environmental determinism?
behaviour is caused by external forces such as previous experience and learning through classical and operant conditioning
what is psychic determinism ?
claims that behaviour is a result of innate drives (id, ego, superego) and unconscious conflicts
what is free will?
free will suggests behaviour is self determined - choose through and actions and therefore have control over their behaviour
what approach advocates for free will
humanism- roger’s and maslow believe individuals are in control of their behaviour and trying to achieve personal growth
what is an example of environmental determinism ?
the behaviourist approach two process model- suggests phobias are acquired abs maintained through conditioning
example if biological determinism
freud -child development occoured in 5 stages marked by different conflicts a child must resolve- if not leads to fixation
what is the scientific emphasis on causal explanations?
science joke the principle all events have a cause. knowledge of the causes allows for predictions. in psychology experiments are used -IV and DV to allow psychologists to identify causes and predict behaviour
