How is a bill introduced
It has to be introduced by a member in Congress either in the House of Representatives or Senate
Where is the bill sent and what happens
Assigned to committee sub committee, where they are debated and amended.
If the bill passes out of the committee, it goes back to the full chamber or floor
Where does a bill go in the house before reaching the floor?
The bill goes to the rules committee to set rules for the debate Before it goes to the floor
What can happen in the Senate before a vote?
Bills can advance by unanimous consent-if all senators agree
In the Senate , you need 60 votes for closure to end debate on a bill
What happens for a bill to get through Congress?
An identical bill must pass the House of Representatives and Senate conference committee
Different parts of the bill get discussed in conference
Each option the president has And what happens
- if president signed a bill, it will become a law.
- if a president vetoes the bill, the bill dies.
But if 2/3 votes in both chambers can override the veto - if the president does nothing to a bill, it becomes a law in 10 days unless Congress adjourns the bill has to die due to pocket veto
