Grammar Key Words
Neology
The study of new words.
Word Class
Noun, verb, adjective or adverb.
Closed Class Words
Categories of which words do not move in or out of.
Structural Words
Build up sentences, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and determiners. Closed Class.
Concrete Nouns
Proper and Common nouns which you can see.
Abstract Nouns
Ideas and processes which cannot be seen.
Count Nouns
Nouns that can be counted and have a different plural form. Cannot be used after a determiner.
Non-Count Noun
Nouns that do not change forms to become plural.
Open Class Words
Groups of words which allow new additions to the class.
Noun Phrase
A phrase centred around a noun that contains no verbs.
Head Noun
The main noun (focus) of a phrase or sentence.
Constituent Structures
The extra parts after the head noun.
Determiners
Words which come before the noun and defines it. Can be indefinite (a) or definite (the).
Modifiers
An adjective or verb that changes the meaning of the noun.
Qualifiers/Post Modifiers
Everything that comes after the noun.
Prepositional Phrase
One that starts with a preposition.
Pre-Modifier
A word that comes before a noun and describes it.
Stative Verb
A verb which cannot be seen.
Dynamic Verbs
Verbs which can be seen.
Transitive Verbs
Ones which must be followed by an object.
Intrasitive Verb
One which doesn’t have to be followed by an object.
Modal Verb
A verb that describes tone, probability or level of choice.
Deontic Verb
A verb that describes little to no choice.
Epistemic Verbs
A verbs that gives options and are suggestive of choice.
Auxiliary Verb
A verb that helps other verbs (be, do and have).
Aspect
The time scale of the verb.
Perfect Action
One which is complete.
Progressive Action
One which is ongoing and likely incomplete.
Primary Auxiliary Verb
A verb that changes the tense (is, are, was).
Subject
Performs the action of the verb.
Object
Receives the action of the verb.
Compliment
Verbs may take a compliment that adds additional information about the subject. Follows verb.
Adverbial
Adds information about the subject of that verb. Generally at the end of a sentence. Are not always adverbs, can be prepositional.
Interrogative
A question.
Declarative.
A statement.
Past Participle
A verb which has been performed in the past. Can be used as an adjective or used to form other verbs (have).
Present Participle
An ongoing verb ending in ‘-ing’. Can also function as an adjective or noun.
