Accent
Variation in pronunciation, often with a particular region.
Dialect
Variation of words associated with a particular region.
Received Pronunciation
An accent that does not identify a person’s region, and is recognised as having high social status.
Unmarked By Person
The subject/verb agreement is not met within an utterance, (‘I were going to the pub’).
Multiple Negation
The use of more than one negative in a sentence, usually used to strengthen an idea (‘I didn’t do nothing’).
Absence of Plural Marking
The method of making a singular noun into a plural form (‘Only two mile to go’).
Unmarked Plurality
When the singular form of a noun is used rather than the plural (‘I paid twenty pound’).
Double Subject
Repeating the subject twice in one sentence (‘I’m always late me’).
Omission of Definite Article
When the producer removes the article before the noun (‘We’re going to shop’).
Pronoun Variation
-Replacing ‘me’ for ‘us’.
-‘Youse’ for you’.
-‘Meself’ instead of ‘myself’.
Preposition Variety
-‘Until’ becomes ‘while’.
-Omission of ‘to’.
-Addition of ‘of’.
Adverbial Variation
-Quick for ‘quickly’.
Irregular Verbs
-When the form of the verb does not change.
-The verb has two forms.
-The verb has three forms.
Regularised Verbs
-Some dialects regularise the verb by adding ‘-ed’ to show the past tense (She drawed).
-Some dialects use the the past participle instead of the past tense (I done).
