Fractional Distillation Of Crude Oil Flashcards
What is crude oil?
A mixture of hydrocarbons
The longer the hydrocarbon…
…the higher the boiling point
From the shortest to the longest hydrocarbons what is the order of fuels?
Refinery gases, gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen.
What are the uses of refinery gases?
Bottled gas used in heating.
What is the use of gasoline?
Fuel for cars.
What is the use of naphtha?
Used in the chemical industry as ‘feedstock’ to make: plastics, dyes and drugs.
What is kerosene used for?
Jet engines.
Heat is diesel used in?
Fuel for Diesel engines in cars, trucks and trains.
What is fuel oil used for?
Domestic central or heating fuel for big ships.
What is bitumen used for?
Road surfacing and asphalt for roofs.
Incomplete combustion can lead to?
Production of carbon monoxide.
Why is cracking necessary?
Short chain hydrocarbons burn well and flow well unlike long chains which are less flammable and more viscous.
