Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
How do covalent structures hold together?
A
There is a strong attraction between the shared elections and the nuclei of the atoms involved.
2
Q
What is covalent bonding between?
A
Non-metals.
3
Q
Why are the boiling points and melting points of simple molecular substances low?
A
The forces of attraction between the molecules are very weak. The intermolecular forces are easy to break and so the melting and boiling points are very low.
4
Q
How do giant covalent structures have high melting and boiling points?
A
All the atoms are bonded together by strong covalent bonds. There are lots of these bonds which means it takes a lot of energy to break them.
