Who were the vestal virgins
A group of six priestesses of the goddess Vesta - they represented the only major female priesthood in Rome
Where did they live
In the Roman Forum which was the hub of social and political activity in Rome - emphasised their importance and prestige
How were they chosen
The Pontifex Maximus chose from girls who were:
- aged between 6-10
- fit and healthy
- had two living parents
- from a prestigious family
- willing to remain in role for 30 years
- willing to take a vow of chastity
What was the role of a Vestal
To protect and maintain the sacred flame which was housed in the temple of Vesta.
What was believed to happen if the flame were to go out
If the flame were to go out Rome would fall. It was believed that Aeneas bought the flame from Troy
What else do the temple of Vesta hold
The Palladium, an effigy of the Goddess Minerva thought to be bought from Rome. Important state documents also were held there
What privileges did the Vestals get
- A home in the House of the Vestals
- Celebrity status
- Front row seats in public games/the theatre
- Free from their father’s authority
- Able to make a will
- Own property
- Free condemned prisoners and slaves
What happened after a vestal completed their service
They were rewarded with a pension and permission to marry. However most remained reasonably independent and were well-off until their deaths
How long would a Vestal have to serve for
30 years
How did the Vestals take part in festivals
They had to sprinkle Mola salsa ( a mixture of salt and flour) on sacrifices before being killed
What was the punishment if the flame went out
the Vestals were stripped and whipped.
What was the punishment if they broke their vow of chastity
They were buried alive as no one was allowed to spill the blood of a Vestal (and the male was whipped to death). They were taken to tomb outside the city and left with some bread so they could die naturally.
