Who is Aeneas (3)
- Mythical hero of Troy and Rome
- Son of the Roman goddess Venus (Aphrodite) and prince Anchises
- Member of the royal line at Troy and cousin to Hector
Why is Aeneas important
He was an ancestor of Remus and Romulus, founders of the city of Rome.

Who protected Aeneas during the war
- Aphrodite

- Poseidon - who normally favoured the Greeks
What does Aeneas embody
Roman ideals of : - loyalty to the state - devotion to family - reverence for the gods This also known as Pietas
What did Aeneas do after Troy fell
Aeneas takes his father on his back and flees with his wife, Creusa, his son, Ascanius, and many other followers
What happened to Creusa
She is lost from the group. Aeneas goes to look for her but finds her spirit instead. She tells him not to be sad because a new home, wife and destiny await him in Hesperus (Italy)
Whose path does Aeneas and his followers follow
Ulysses’, they go through Scylla and Charybdis and also land on the island of the Cyclops.
What does Aeneas do in Carthage
He became distracted as a ruler and lusted over queen Dido. However after being forced by Jupiter he had to leave ‘not of (his) own free will’ - it was Aphrodite that made him lust
What does Aeneas find out in the underworld
He meets his father in the underworld who tells him :
- Romulus will found Rome
- A Ceaser will come from the line of Ascanius
- Rome will rule the world
What does prince Turnus do
He opposed the trojans and wished to marry Lavinia who was promised to Aeneas. They then fought

What does Aeneas do out of rage
After seeing Turnus with his dead comrades sword belt, in a rash and vengeful move he killed Turnus rather than fighting him nobly on the battlefield.
What did Aeneas do after marrying Lavinia
Aeneas founds Lavinium in which he and his countrymen settled in
What did Aeneas’ son do
He founded Alba Longa where Romulus and Remus were born many generations later
When was the Aeneid written
Under the emperor Augustus, who claimed ancestry with Aeneas through Julius Caesar.
