It was a yearly festival however every four years it was expanded to an 8 day festival called the great Panathenaia

Only Athenians and resident foreigners - this was also a festival women had a part to play however slaves were not allowed

The Peplos travelled in the procession from the Dipylon gate to the foot of the Acropolis and then transferred to a sail of a boat and pushed up the rocky hill to be presented to Athena Parthenos

A 2 mile torch race - the winners torch would be used to light the sacrificial flame to Athena

Prize giving -
Prizes were a Panathenaic amphorae which contained olive oil
On one side there would be an image of the event they won and on the other an image of Athena
