Fossil Fuels and Renewable Resources + Global Warming Flashcards
What are the 3 types of Fossil Fuels?
- Coal
- Oil
- Gas
What are advantages of the use of Fossil Fuels?
- They produce a lot of energy per kg of fuel
2. They are good for basic demand
What are the disadvantages of the use of Fossil Fuels?
- They will eventually run out
2. They release alot of green house gases
What are Biofuels?
A biofuel is a fuel taken from living or recently living organisms. Biofuels can be burnt instead of fossil fuels to release energy
What are the 2 types of Biofuel?
- Methane Gas
2. Plant Material
What are the advantages of Biofuels?
- Can be used in vehicles
- Carbon Neutral
- Renewable
What are the disadvantages of Biofuels?
- Uses farm land
- Lower energy output than other fuels like fossil fuels
- Using crops for fuel rather than food
What is Nuclear Fuel?
Nuclear Fuel uses the energy released from unstable atoms (isotopes) when they split. This process is called Nuclear Fission.
(E.g. Uranium or Platonium)
What are the advantages of Nuclear Fuel / Power?
- Reliable generation of electricity
- No CO² or SO² produced
- Good to meet basic demand
- Lots of energy per kg of fuel
What are the disadvantages of Nuclear Fuel / Energy?
- Radioactive waste materials are dangerous
- Radioactive waste products need to be disposed of
- Expensive to build / decomision a nuclear power station
- Non-renewable resource (E.g. Uranium)
What is Wind Power?
Wind Power is Power produced by massive blades spun around by the wind which is connected to a generator, producing energy.
What are the advantages of Wind Power?
- Wind is free
- No pollutants produced
- Some think they add to the landscape
- Can be used in remote locations
- Land beneath the turbine can still be used (E.g. Farming)
What are the disadvantages of Wind Power?
- It can be unreliable (Wind speed varies)
- No wind, No electricity
- Noisy
- Some people dislike how they look
What is Hydroelectric Power?
Hydroelectric Power is falling water being used to turn a turbine which is connected to a generator, producing electricity.
What are the advantages of Hydroelectric Power?
- Long life time
- Very reliable
- Quick start up time
- Low running costs
- Renewable Resource
