Formulas Dispel Wind-Dampness Flashcards
Depending on the pattern, wind-damp herbs are combined with deputies and assistants from three other groups of herbs. What are those groups?
Invigorate the Blood, Tonify Qi and Nourish the Blood, and Tonify the Liver and Augment the Kidneys
- Expel Wind Damp
- Upper body wind damp causing upper body pain, headache, backache, heaviness and generalized pain
- Qiang Ho and Du Ho
Notopterygium Decoction to Overcome Dampness/Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang
Tonifies and harmonizes the protective and nutritive qi, dispels wind, and eliminated dampness.
• Wind cold damp bi causing joint pain and numbness
This is painful obstruction in a patient with deficiency of qi and blood.
Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction/Juan Bi Tang
- One of the most used W/D/C formulas in the world
- Expel wind damp bi syndrome and tonify deficiency of Liver and Kidney
- # 1 Tx root and branch of lower body/back pain
- Tonifies everything
- Treats the root and the branch at the same time
- Warming: be careful with heat signs
Pubescent Angelica and Taxillus Decoction/Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang
Unblocks the flow of yang qi, promotes movement (in areas with painful obstruction), dispels wind, eliminated dampness, and clears heat.
- Dispels wind damp bi with localized heat
- Swollen painful joints that are warm to the touch
- Heat is worse at night (yin time)
- Has the hottest herb and a very cold herb.
Cinnamon Twig, Peony, and Anemarrhena Decoction/Gui Zhi Shao Yao Zhi Mu Tang
- Dispels wind, moves qi, invigorates blood, fortifies sinews and bones and eliminates cold-dampness
- Good for deficiency, good for swollen, enlarged, painful knees
- “Crane’s Knee”
- Niu Xi: guides blood down to the knees
Major Saposhnikovia Decoction/Da Fang Feng Tang
- Resolves wind damp phlegm and blood stasis bi
- Sharp pain in the joints
- Hong Hua is red. Resonates with the blood.
- Resolves phlegm
Shu Feng Huo Xue Tang/Disperse Wind and Invigorates Blood Decoction
- Disperses damp heat in the channels
- Damp heat bi syndrome
- Treats steaming of damp heat, leading to shaking
- Pain in the joints
- Wen Bing tradition. Heat in the qi level affecting the four limbs. Spleen governs the four limbs and the flesh.
Xuan Bi Tang/Diffuses Bi Decoction
- Clears heat and expels damp
- A wide variety of applications with damp heat as a diagnosis (lodged in the lower burner), leucorrhea, sinews and bones weakness or atrophy
- Damp heat discharge, yeast infections
- Drain damp heat in the lower burner, damp heat Bi Syndrome with heat consuming blood, sinew, flesh
Includes Huang Bai, Yi Yi Ren, Cang Zhu, Niu Xi
• with fever add zhi mu, if aversion to cold with no sweating add ma huang, if deficiency yin add shang di and bai shao, and for leg qi (MS) add Mu Gua
Four Marvel Pill/Si Miao Wan
- Disperses swelling on the exterior and treats dry blood in the interior (blood deficiency, usually from heat but not always. Sometimes also called withered blood. choppy, thin, weak pulse.)
- Swelling and pain in the joints with numbness and difficulty in moving
- Swelling on the exterior (Ma Huang) dry blood on the interior
- Ying: Blood
Yi Yi Ren Tang/Coix Decoction from Enlightened Physicians
- Warms the channels, nourishes the blood and unblocks the blood vessels
- Yang xu cold hands and feet. Wind cold bi. Reynauds, frostbite
- Underlying pathology is blood deficiency (Dang Gui)
- Dang Gui and Shao Yao: tonify the blood
- Mu Tong: gets to the extremities, hands and feet. Used in this formula as a vine, a guide.
- Key: nourishes Blood and unblocks Blood vessels
Dang Gui Si Ni Tang/Angelica Frigid Four Decoction
- Tonifies Liver and Kidneys, qi and blood, expels wind and dampness
- Liver and Kidney deficiency with qi and blood stasis with tremors of the hands and feet
San Bi Tang/Three Obstruction Decoction
- Wind damp heat bi syndrome with high fever, sweating, irritability, thirst, and pain and swelling in the joints. Heat with lurking cold in the joints.
- Clear heat category, associated formula of Bai Hu Tang. Adds Gui Zhi.
Bai Hu Jia Gui Zhi Tang/White Tiger Plus Cinnamon Twigs Decoction
- Damp warm heat pathogen or damp painful obstruction. Focus on damp hot swollen joints.
- Modification of Bai Hu Tang with Damp Heat Bi.
Bai Hu Jia Cang Zhu Tang/White Tiger Plus Atractylodes Decoction
