Q

Empirical question :

I have 10g of hydrocarbon that contains 8g of carbon - whats the empirical formula

A

1) mass of hydrogen - 10-8=2 2g of h
2)find moles of each by dividing mass of element present by atomic mass
Carbon= 8/12=0.67 Hydrogen = 2/1=2
3)divide each by the smaller number
0.67/0.67 =1 and 2/0.67= 3
4) ratio is 1:3

Q

What is molecular formula ?

A

The actual number of molecules in a compound
Eg - the empirical formula of a hydrocarbon is CH(2) and its molecular mass is 42.
So 42/14=3
Meaning the molecular formula = 3 x CH(2) = C(3)H(6)
