What is social control?
The need for people to behave in ways which we expect them to and force people to conform to social norms.
What are 3 types of internal social control?
Moral conscience, Tradition and culture, and internalisation of social rules and morality
What does the Super Ego do?
Makes us feel guilty
Develops through early socialisation
Allows us to exercise self control
How does tradition and culture provide internal control?
Has become part of identity, provides us with a set of cultured rules, gives us a sense of belonging to a community
How does internalisation of social rules and morality provide social control?
Shaped by our parents rules and expectations which eventually become part of us which is why we follow social norms and behaviours
Rational ideology - we internalise social rules and use them to tell what is right and wrong
What are the 4 formal agents of social control?
Police, CPS, Judges and Magistrates, Prison Service
What are the 3 informal agents of social control?
Family, Peers, Education System
