What is coercion
Forcing, through physically or psychologically, people to do certain things
What are an example of coercion?
Negative sanctions of the criminal justice system
What did Hirschi say?
People conform and obey laws due to their bonds with society and if the bonds are weak we are more likely to commit crime
What are the 4 bonds?
Attachment, Commitment, Involvement, Beliefs
Explain attachment
The more attached you are to a person the more you care of their opinion of you
Explain commitment
The more committed you are to something such as a job the more you have to lose by committing crime
Explain involvement
The more involved with something such as youth clubs the less time you have for crime
Explain beliefs
If we have been socialised to believe it is right to obey the law we are less likely to break it
How does parenting help?
Helps to create bonds and low self control is a major cause of delinquency which results from poor upbringing
What should parents do?
Involve themselves in teenagers life
Take an interest in what they do at school
Show strong disapproval of criminal beahviour
