Formation & Reducing the Effect of Tropical Storms Flashcards
Where do tropical storms form
They form over warm oceans above 27˚C, in the summer and autumn, and 5-15 degrees N/S of the equator
How are tropical storms formed
A strong upwards movement of air draws water vapour up from the ocean. As this air rises it cools and forms clouds. which in turn releases heat. This heat then powers the storm and draws more vapour up from the ocean. Then several smaller thunderstorms join together to form a tropical storm. The storm then develops an eye at its center where air descends rapidly. Upon reaching land it gradually slows down and weakens due to friction
How can we warn and help people to combat the storms
Monitoring and prediction can allow us to issue warnings prior to the storms allowing people to prepare. Reinforced doors, windows and roofs can offer protection, along with storm drains, raised houses, sea walls and cyclone shelters
