What are Formal Fallacies?
“If (antecedent), then (consequent).”
Affirming the Consequent
One premise affirms the consequent of another premise (Conclusion is false)
Denying the Antecedent
One premise denies the antecedent of another premise (Conclusion is false)
Undistributed Middle
Speaker assumes two things related to a third thing are related to each other
Valid: Modus Ponens (Premise)
If in a sorority (P) then female (Q).
In a sorority (P).
Therefore, female (Q)
Valid: Modus Tollens (Conclusion)
If in a sorority (P) then female (Q).
Not female (Not Q).
Therefore, not in sorority (Not P).
Chain Argument
If in a sorority (A) then female (B).
If female (B) then have longer
life expectancy (X).
Therefore, if in a sorority (A)
then have longer life
expectancy (X).
