Form To Function: Skeleton & Muscle Flashcards
What are 4 functions of the musculoskeletal system?
- Support
- Movement
- Protection
- Eating
Indeterminant growth vs Determinant growth
Indeterminant growers grow when times are good (food is plentiful, easy thermoregulation). Continue growing regardless of age
Determinant growers have a fixed maximum size. Their growth levels off after they reach maturation
How many front/back toes are on reptilia and amphibia?
Reptilia: 5 front and hind
Amphibia: 4 front, 5 hind
Name the parts of pedicellate teeth
Pedicel (bottom)
Soft tissue (between crown and pedicel)
Crown (top of tooth, outside of gums)
What are the two types of teeth found in amphibians?
Vomerine (center of palate)
Maxillary (outer edge)
What is unique about amphibian skeletons? And how does the muscular system help support it?
Amphibian bones aren’t very ossified or fused. Making them fairly weak and non-supportive. Amphibians’ muscles around the girdles are more developed to help support joints and bones.
