What is a preen gland?
A gland that produces an oily substance to help waterproof feathers
Name the 3 basic parts of every flower
Calamus: Thick hollow base of feather
Rachis: Thin hollow shaft that extends outward from the calamus
Vane: What people think of the feather, the colored outer portion made up of barbs and barbules
What are the two portions of feathers?
Plumulaceous: down portion of feather, mostly insulation
Pennaceous: The Vane, used for display, flight and osmoregulation
What is plumage?
All of the feathers on a bird
What two types of plumages do birds have?
Alternate plumages (mating season) Basic Plumages (non-breeding)
