Form To Function Respiration Flashcards
What is the most common respiration among amphibians?
Cutaneous Respiration
What are the 4 types of respiration found among amphibians?
Buccopharyngeal Respiration
Cutaneous Respiration
Lungs
Gills
When would you find an amphibian with Gills?
The Larval stage (all amphibians have them in their larval stage)
2 pros and 2 cons of cutaneous respiration
Pros: Energy conservation, Able to breath in and out of water
Cons: Vulnerability, Restricted to moist environments
What is the most common form of respiration among reptiles?
Lungs (Bidirectional negative pressure)
List the four tetrapod classes in order of increasing lung complexity
Least: Amphibian, Reptiles, Bird-Mammal
What 4 types of respiration can reptiles use?
Lungs
Cutaneous Respiration (Rare)
Pharyngeal Respiration (Rare)
Cloacal Respiration
What creates the negative pressure in aves respiratory systems?
How many are there?
Air Sacs (9)
How does uni-directional breathing work in Aves?
Both air sacs expand, pulling air from the outside into the posterior air sacs. The air in the lungs is pulled into the anterior air sacs.
Both air sacs contract, the posterior air sacs push air into the lungs. The anterior air sacs push air out the trachea and out of the body
What decreases the efficiency of bidirectional breathing in mammals?
The lungs never get rid of all the air inside them, known as stale air, which is deoxygenated. When mammals breath in, the fresh air mixes with the stale air. The fresh and stale air mixture lowers the oxygen content of the air.
