Forensic Entomology 2 Flashcards
What is a maggot
Maggot is a soft bodied legless larva of an insect
What is a pupa
Pupa is an insect in the non feeding stage between larva and adult
What other factors affect succession
Other factors that affects succession are
Humidity, pH, chemical pollution and soil conditions.
Why can forensic entomology only be an estimate
Forensic entomology can only be an estimate because
Insect may take time to find body
Conditions e.g temperature, shelter that body was in are unknown and this will affect insects that come to body
Treatment of body prior unknown (e,g dipped in acid)
How can you use maggot length to estimate time of death
Can use maggot length to estimate time of death because you can assess how long maggots/eggs have been on body based on stage of development.
1 days as egg, 1 day as 1st instar larva, 2 days as 2nd instar larva, 2.5-3.5 as 3rd instar larva and 6-12 days as pupa.
How can you use pupation time
Can use pupation time by Taking pupa from body, then let it develop to determine species of fly and measure time it takes to pupate so you can compare it total time to develop into fly which can be used to work out time of death. E.g if it took 12 days to pupate , then it implies that the body has been there for roughly 22days
