Gene Splicing Flashcards

1
Q

When does gene splicing occur and what does splicing mean

A

Gene splicing happens between transcription and translation

Splicing means joining to pgether

Paradigm shift

A

Paradigm shift is a radical rethink of ideas, instead of a gradual one.

Q

What happens during gene splicing

A

During gene splicing, DNA is made from introns and extrons
transcription happens first
Pre mRNA I/ nuclear RNA is made, also contains Exons and introns.
Then, introns are cut out, then Exons bind together. The sequence is kept, but different combinations. E.g E1 E2 E3, E2 E3, E1, E2. Would not go E3,E2
the proteins made will be related as they have the same sequence of amino acids but they are different proteins

Q

What is sequence of polypeptide synthesis

A

Sequence of polypeptide synthesis is
1 transcription forms pre mRNA
2 pre mRNA modified to give mRNA molecules
3 translation of mRNA to synthesise polypeptide chain

Q

What are introns and exons

A

Introns are non coding sections of DNA in between exons.

Exons are expressed DNA (coding DNA)
