Forensic Dactyloscopy Flashcards

of Physical Evidence
Fingerprint
the science that deals with the study of identification, classification and comparison of fingerprints
Dactyloscopy
It is the reproduction on some smooth
surfaces of the pattern or design formed by
the ridges on the inside of the end joint of the
fingers or thumb, through the medium of ink
or any coloring substance capable of
producing visibility.
Definition Fingerprints
•As an IMPRESSION:
It is the identification of person by means of the ridges appearing on the fingers, on the palms and on the soles of the feet.
Fingerprints
•As a SCIENCE:
Principle of fingerprint
Individuality
Permanency
Infallibility
IMPORTANCE OR VALUE OF FINGERPRINTS
- Prevent impersonation (changing personal data)
- Speedy identification of wrongdoer (falsification, forgery)
- Serve to give evidence (identification of criminals)
- Helps to identify victims of disasters, calamities, floods, etc.
- Identifies bodies whose cadaver are beyond recognition.
- Aids judiciary in penal treatment (fingerprinting of prisoners)
- Prevent criminal substitution of the newly born.
•The impression of ten fingers of an individual person
Ten prints/standard fpc
prints of those person who are legally arrested
Criminal Ten print Card –
– prints of an individual who are seeking for clearance or for the process of elimination
Non criminal Ten print Cards
TWO TYPES OF
FINGERPRINT IMPRESSIONS
Rolled impression
Plain impression
ELEVEN (11) POINTS TO BE CONSIDERED IN TAKING LEGIBLE FINGERPINTS
- Cleanliness of equipment.
- The right kind and correct amount of ink.
- Proper distribution of ink on the glass slab or inking plate.
- The distance of the subject from the inking plate on the fingerprint card.
- The advice of the operator to the subject to relax and never to aid the operator.
- The pressure exerted must be slight and even the rolling be continuous movement including the lifting.
- The nail of the fingers should be at right angle to the glass slab or to the card before starting the rolling, always roll the fingers until the other side of the nails is reached.
- The inking and printing must always reached below the first joint of the fingers.
- The thumb should be rolled towards the subject’s body and all other fingers away from the subject’s body.
- While rolling the fingers, the subject’s hand should be held/controlled properly to prevent twisting.
- Proper alignment.
An epidermal hairless skin usually found in the palm and soles.
- This is where fingerprints are formed
- It is called “_____” because of their biological function to grasp and hold on to objects.
Friction skin

TWO COMPONENTS OF THE FRICTION SKIN
Ridge and furrow
•– are tiny elevation or hill
Ridge
Are the depressions or canal between ridges
Furrow
Two layers of the skin
Epidermis
Dermis
the upper pr outer layer of the skin
Epidermis –
the lower or inner layer of the skin
•Dermis –
Fingerprints found at the crime scene
known as chance impressions and means something hidden or concealed.
are those markings usually rather indistinct, left by the oily matters or perspiration exuded from the finger tips or palms upon any substances which the fingers/ palms may have touched.
LATENT PRINTS
3 LATENT PRINTS
Invisible latent prints
Semi-visible latent prints
Visible latent prints
Two methods of developing Latent prints
Physical method
Chemical method
Types of Physical method
Brushing method
Rolling method
Principle involved is that the developing reagents adhered or stick to the sweat that are present in the latent print.
Physical method
Principle involved is that when the developing reagent comes in contact with the chemical composition of the sweat another chemical element is formed or there is a chemical reaction that takes place.
Chemical method
4 Chemical method
Ninhydrin Acetone Solution
•Ninhydrin Benzene Solution
•Superglue (Gas Method)
•Emulgen Black Method
THINGS TO BE CONSIDER IN SEARCHING, DEVELOPING AND LIFTING LATENT PRINTS
Searching
Developing
Pioneer of Forensic Science “ Every contact leaves a trace”
Dr. Edmond Locard
Searching
- Always use gloves
- Point of Entry
- Point of Attack
- Point of Exit
Developing
- Attention should be given to objects, such as guns, door knobs, glasses, windows, papers, bottles, and protect and preserve intact of any latent print developed.
- Correct amount and quality of powder to be used. The purpose is to developed latent prints that can be classified, analyzed and identified.
used in lifting latent prints
Lifting-Vinylon lifting tape or scotch tape
- Latent print
