When did France invade Brittany and why did HVII feel the need to intervene ?
- 1487
- HVII 1489 summoned parliament for extraordinary revenue
1. sense of obligation for the bretons
2. fear that French control of Brittany could increase French threat to England
Treaty of Redon
- Feb 1489
- Anne would pay for a small English army to defend Brittany but Anne surrendered and reluctantly married Charles VIII
- English army were marooned in France and Perkin Warbeck then seemed French backing
Invasion of France and results
- 1492
- France sought a peace settlement
- Treaty of Etaples Nov 1492 : Charles VIII withdrew support from Warbeck and the French pension of £5,000 per annum was agreed
Trade with the Netherlands
- 1493 : Hospitality offered to Warbeck by Philip and Maximilian so HVII placed a trade embargo on the Netherlands
- 1496 : Intercurses Magnus agreed which brought the embargo to the end
Intercurses malus
- 1506 : never put in to place but had beneficial terms for England
Scottish invasion of England
- 1496 : Warbeck and a small force were sent across the border but little support and nothing was achieved
- HVII retaliated and sent a bigger force across the border but was at the same time as the Cornish rebellion
Treaty of perpetual peace
- 1502
- Margret and James IV marriage agreement which improve anglo-Scottish relations until HVII’s death
Treaty of Medina del Campo
- 1489 (marriage treaty, agreed not to harbour pretenders and mutual protection)
- Issues : dowry + instability due to Warbeck
- Married in 1501 but Arthur died a year later
- 1504 Isabella died and HVII lost interest in the marriage
Treaty of Windsor
- 1506
- Juana + Philip were forced to take refuge in England
- Intercurses malus was agreed
- Return of the Earl of Suffolk
- Proposed marriage alliance
- Recognition of Juana and Philip as rulers of Castile
Issues in the Aftermath of the Treaty of Windsor
- Philip died and Juana was declared mad by Ferdinand so he became regent
- Marriage between Henry and COA couldn’t go ahead in Ferdinand’s life time
- Diplomatically isolated
Issues in Ireland + solutions
- Kildare had Yorkist sympathies
- crowned Simnel King of Ireland in 1496 and supported Warbeck in 1491
- Poynings law 1495 was passed and the Irish parliament couldn’t pass a law without the crown agreeing
- 1496 : Kildare served HVII loyally and by 1500 there was peace secured
Following the death of Elizabeth of York what did HVII do ?
- Tried (unsuccessfully) to re-enter the marriage market
- Possibilities with France, the HRE, Castile and Aragon were considered
- Nothing happened because the Princesses were reluctant to marry HVII and he himself lost interest
How much was spent between 1505-1509 on Burgundy, Netherlands and the HRE ?
- £225,000 - £342,000
What limited the developments of English trading ?
- Hanseatic League limited English trading interests in the Baltic
When and why was a trade embargo put on the Netherlands ?
- 1493 (Due to Margret of Burgundy’s support of Warbeck)
- Antwerp was the commercial metropolis of Europe
- 1496 : Intercurses Magnus restored trading links
What did HVII pass to encourage English trade ?
- Navigation acts 1485 and 1489 to encourage English shipping and therefore trade
